Why Don Bosco International School?

A Life Sketch of Don Bosco

the father and friend of youth was born on August 16, 1815, in a peasant family in the little hamlet of Becchi, some 20kilometers from Turin, Italy. When John was only two years old his father, Francis Bosco passed away. His grief stricken mother, Margaret Occiena Bosco, had a harrowing time to bring him up.

At the age of nine John had a mysterious dream

At the age of nine John had a mysterious dream, which led him to his future mission. He decided to become a priest and commit his life to the welfare of young people.

To complete his education John had to do his share of work on

Working as a servant, teaching, assisting a tailor, doing chores for a black smith and keeping score at a billiard table were some of the things he did in order to pay for his food, lodging and tuition while at school. In due course John entered the seminary and was ordained a priest on June 5, 1841. From then on he was known as Don Bosco (Father Bosco).

Very soon Don Bosco became a frequent visitor to the poorer quarters of the city.

The young priest was distressed by the swarms of neglected children whom he encountered. In the miserable garrets and cellars which he visited, he found exemplified all the evils of overcrowding, all the terrible effects of herding the young and innocent with those already corrupt. In the prisons he met youth serving, terms for every type of crime. While during his evening walks he constantly saw bands of young people fighting, making themselves a danger to society. He decided that the work of his life would be to redeem these miserable youth.

Don Bosco’s work for boys started with one boy, a mason’s apprentice.

Soon this boy brought others and the number of “Don Bosco’s friends” multiplied. He gave them facilities for games and taught them their religion. youth.

Project

Project Name: Menstrual Hygiene Awareness in Bangladesh

Project Duration: School Years July 2023 – April 2025

Project Level: Grades 9–10

Conducted By: Sahil Sadman, Rishwana Hoque, Shadman Rahman, and Shadman Shakir

Centre Name: Don Bosco School & College

Centre Number: BD069

Project Management

Students from Don Bosco School & College initiated a transformative community action project titled “Menstrual Hygiene Awareness in Bangladesh”, with the aim of addressing the stigma, misinformation, and health risks surrounding menstruation in under-resourced areas.

Led by Sahil Sadman, Rishwana Hoque, Shadman Rahman, and Shadman Shakir, the project tackled a deeply neglected issue in many parts of Bangladesh. What started as a school project quickly transformed into a meaningful grassroots intervention, delivering real impact to communities within the Dhaka Division — and later inspiring further outreach in the Uttara urban slums, where the model was expanded and continued by locals.

Project Overview

The team initially planned to design educational booklets, but after conducting field visits and learning that many women in the targeted areas were illiterate, they quickly adapted. Sahil Sadman played a key role in proposing a shift to interactive awareness sessions, combining health education with community engagement. These sessions addressed:

  • The basics of menstrual hygiene and infection prevention
  • Safe use and disposal of sanitary products
  • Psychological and social myths related to menstruation
  • Involvement of male family members to help reduce stigma

Surveys designed and analysed by Sahil Sadman revealed a strong link between menstrual education and hygiene product use. He also introduced post-session follow-up calls — a critical step that helped evaluate the lasting impact of their work. Among women who had never used sanitary pads before, more than half expressed interest in switching to pads and in spreading what they had learned to others.

Meanwhile,Sahil & Rishwana Hoque led the one-on-one conversations with women who were hesitant to speak in public. Her empathetic approach allowed women to open up about their experiences, often for the first time in their lives. One woman confided, “I always thought I was hexed,” a heartbreaking reflection of the deep stigma this project sought to dismantle.

Shadman Rahman and Shadman Shakir conducted extensive research to shortlist infection-prone areas, collaborating with doctors and field experts to identify communities most in need. Their efforts helped the team choose two key locations — Chakirtaluk village and Goalanda Upazila in Rajbari — where the team conducted 10-day sessions, reaching over 50 participants directly.

A Ripple Effect of Impact

What made this project exceptional was not just the immediate impact, but the ripple effect that followed. Inspired by the success of the Don Bosco students, local volunteers and community members later replicated and expanded the initiative in Uttara’s urban slums — this time reaching more families and spreading the message even further.

Why This Matters

This project reminded us that social change doesn’t always require large-scale operations — sometimes, all it takes is a group of thoughtful young people with the willingness to listen, adapt, and act.

We are incredibly proud of Sahil, Rishwana, Shadman, and Shakir, whose courage, compassion, and collaboration made this project a beacon of awareness, dignity, and empowerment. Their work exemplifies the values we nurture at Don Bosco School & College: leadership, empathy, and service to society.
